Task:

Brief 1 : Casa Mia Re-brand

' A Hand rendered typographic investigation of descriptives with a focus on branding the food outlet, Casa Mia. I am going to re-brand Casa Mia because its identity doesnt reflect its ethos or food. The products I will create will be Menus, tableware, in restaurant posters, banners and promotional material. There will be a range of menu designs, for different courses and drinks, with a range of hand rendered type. The method of distribution will be print to be considered for online delivery.'

Brief 2 : Doing my Nut in

' An educational product investigation of regional language with a focus on defining and informing. I am going to produce dictionary format publications because it will help people to understand an array of regional dialect. The products I will produce will be publications, advertisement and promotional material. The range will be 5 publications based on 5 locations and language. The method of distribution will be print and available as an e-book.'

Brief 3 : 10 Things you should know

'An illustrative investigation of educational material with a focus on what life lessons children don't learn at school. I am going to produce several books because children need educating from home too. The products will consist of books, book shelf graphics, book cases, retail graphics for Waterstones and a book bus. The range will be ten books, looking at 10 different topics. The method of distribution will be print and web, retail graphics and educational material.

Brief 4 : Accessorize Autumn & Winter Collection 2012

' A pattern ad illustration investigation of branding with a focus on the link between products sold and the retail graphics. I am going to produce the design material for their Autumn and WInter collection because customers need to be aware of new products being sold. The products will consist of product tags and labels, packaging, display and stand design, shopping bags / wrap, wall and floor murals and website design. There will be a range of surface pattern designs pushed across the products. The method of distribution will be through printed retail graphics and packaging.

Brief 5: Type Factory

A typographic investigations of the origins of type with a focus on educating and informing others. I am going to hold a type event, because people want to learn about type. The products will consist of exhibition material, posters, boards, wayfinding, publications and promotional material. There will be a range of 5 typefaces that we will, as a collaborative, that we will focus on educating and informing about. The method of distribution will be printed materials, used within an open event.

Task 2: Skill Set - Identifying top ten:

  1. Do I want to specialise in hand rendered typography? Will this lose me other opportunities? Or become a good focus if I ever become a freelancer?
  2. Improving my hand rendered type. I need to explore new styles, materials, and software which can improve my designs and potentially make them live.
  3. Improving my layout skills. My image work is strong but lacks context, when I apply text, my poor layout skills take away from the overall design.
  4. Improving my typography skills. This goes alongside layout. I want the ability to produce a type and image piece of work which is high quality.
  5. Improve my networking skills, being more pro-active., Gaining a range of contacts. This will help me improve my skills, prospects of getting work experience or maybe even a job.
  6. Which studios in Leeds do I like best? I want to stay in Leeds. I need to identify companies I'd like to work for and start contact and networking now.
  7. How to become a freealancer. I'm not sure if this is something I want to do, and have the ability to become one day. I need to research, talk to people, companies, and freelancers to know if its for me
  8. Which area of Graphic Design am I interested in working with? As I produce and focus on image work, this could be taken across a range of areas, I need to find a focus.
  9. I want to produce a range of books and publications, improving my skills in, and exploring, binding and print methods. I feel this format best suits my style of work.
  10. Completely my self identity, finding my USP and promoting myself, with distribution material. How else are people going to know I exist?
