1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

Throughout this module I have stumbled upon a range of things I lack any skill in, the most obvious being that of After effects; having never used the program I found it pretty difficult to get a grip on and understand. Although we had several workshops teaching us how to use the program, I found it really difficult to understand even the simplest of actions. Over time though I did manage to understand the program, and how best to utilise it, through doing some animation first hand. I think the stepping point was making the silent movie, although frustrating and taking a lot longer than it should have, it gave me a good amount of first hand experience using the program, making me feel more comfortable when it came to approaching making the idents and title sequence. I did very much doubt my skills in After Effects, but now, after finishing the title sequence, idents and silent movies, I can see how much my skills have grown in this short period of time.

Another element I feel has developed is my organisation skills. Although, previous to this module, I felt my organisation skills were good, with the amount of work we've all had on, I've needed to be super organised, setting myself action plans, and doing lists. Not just doing daily 'to do' lists but weekly, in very detailed bullet points just to keep me upto date. It became routine every day to prepare my next few days, I feel its a really good habit to get into and one to carry on throughout university.

I have always had a negative attitude toward digital work of any description, so in approaching this brief I already had taken a disliking to it.  My motivation levels were pretty low to begin with, especially with the difficult I found in using the software. But over time, as my design began to come into shape, I gained a real motivation to produce more and more work, as seeing my work in motion is some what satisfying.

Another skill I feel has developed within this module is the use of colour, in the past i've been very bland in colour palette choice, sticking to browns and desaturated colour, if any. Within this project, working with very colour subject matter, I needed to use the colour appropriate to the fruit in order to make my animations recognisable and life-like. Alongside working with colour, I have used texture, as I found a real liking for it within OUGD201 and realised to would add realistic qualities to my work. I can say I'm now very confident in using colour within my work, and know how to use it appropriately.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I've really had to go outside my comfort zone within this brief, considering the media we have had to work in. I've avoided using hand crafted and rendered pieces due to the technical issues I knew I would have getting them from paper to screen. So I've almost adapted my digital style, to create the aura of a hand crafted piece, through colour, texture and appearance; almost montaging my work digitally. It was said within a feedback session that my title sequence had a hand rendered quality. I'm glad I've managed to transfer my style across from paper to screen (with out physically scanning to do so), its reassured me that I don't lose myself when I work entirely on digital work. Again, thats another approach to design I've improved on. Using digital has never been my strong point, but my knowledge of programs, technically and physically has improved, I can transfer ideas to screen precisely, through storyboarding. That of which has also been a new design method I've used this year. At first I found it a huge bore, and found it quite difficult, but now more than ever I've come to realise how useful they have been in regard to the direction of my work. With a storyboard to hand, it was easy to know what to do on screen, quickly and efficiently, without one I'd struggle. This was all part of the organisation of creating my animation, and became the most useful thing to do and utilise.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

The imagery within my work I feel is one of my strengths, as I spent the majority of my time creating and perfecting these to animate. These were created to add realistic elements, to back up the realism of my 'Top ten title sequence'. This use of realism I feel is another strength within my work. Alongside this is the use of colour, its been utalised well, to make my items of fruit have truth to appearance. Imagery in general I feel is the main strength within this project, in had made up absolutely everything that of all my idents, title sequence and packaging.

*****

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The main weakness I can identify within my work is my lack of After Effects skills in some areas, I know teh basic skills well but didn't use my initiative to find out what else was out there I could possibly experiment with, ask about or research. I regret doing so as It could have made my work that of a higher quality, and anything I picked up, I could have used in further projects.
With working in After Effects I soon found out the importance of organisation. I had failed to name my projects, files and images accordingly, which made my life a lot harder than it should have been. This effected my work quality hugely, things I wanted to do, I couldn't, because I was unable to find the suitable folder or item to do so. This is certainly something I will do in the future, after learning the hard way.
Audio was also another weakness I found within my work, I had struggled figuring out audio levels, and hadn't taken a step back, watched the entirety of my videos and listened. After having a crit, it was mentioned that my audio levels were all over the place and needed to hold some consistancy. I feel this was down to me not using audio from the beginning, I have come to find design really works best around sound, I will start with it in the future.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

Looking at the pro's and con's within this project has made me realise the things I did wrong, and shouldn't do again, and the things I did right and will continue to do so. Files and organisation being a key thing I didn't do very well, I have come to realise the importance of it and within future projects will make it my priority to be organised from day one.
Not starting earlier on was something I regretted, as it was only towards the end of my project that I realised how little time I had to actually do it, I didn't make it a priority and I should have done.
Something I did right was time keeping (after I eventually made it a priority), I made daily lists of things I needed to do, created weekly action plans, and stood by them, making sure I completed each and every task on time. This really helped me when things got a little stressed and busy, to compact my problems and things I had to do, into an easy readable form.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance - 5
Punctuality - 5
Motivation - 4
Commitment - 4
Quantity of work produced - 3
Quality of work produced - 2
Contribution to group - 3

Final title sequence

I'm pretty sure I've posted this elsewhere, but just to be sure!

Top ten things - Assessed learning outcomes - Peer feedback

" Top ten - Consistant style with appropriate tone, explored through the visuals; positive, bright and fun! Some issues with sound settings.
The use of one logo at the end is a good use of branding, ties the programme with the channel.
Silent movie - Clear representations of the words. Good visual language skills communicated through the 4d media."

"A lot of research done. (you seem organised). Title sequence - Audio levels too low at the beginning - don't put the date and time on. Audio too quiet on ident 1 and 2. Nice consistency in design - mix between textures and vector - good experimental. Good variety idents of techniques.
Really good imagery and choice of music. A lot of different effects used. Good packaging."

Top ten things - Final packaging design

I wanted to be creative in regard to the design of my packaging. In the time given I couldn't do much, so decided to produce a design which, layer by layer, would create an overall image. I had the visual elements already made up so it was simple enough to do. I was consistent in colour choices, sticking to the same palette used within my idents and title sequence. I made sure the CD would be secure by cutting out semi-circles to hold the CD in place.

Top ten things - Packaging design

I found thinking about packaging design quite easy, due to the fact I already had a large amount of artwork due to the direction I took regarding my idents and title sequence. I simply had to apply the artwork to a template.

I looked at some examples of creative CD packaging and realised that something simple, using my already created vectors, would be most appropriate. I tried a few different ideas, drawing them up and trying them out, but found a simple, 3 piece square, folding design to work best. With more time I would have been able to try and make something 3d, in the shape of a piece of fruit.

Top ten things - Problems I encountered

Positioning, scale and parenting.

Throughout the period of this brief I have really struggled positioning and scaling in sync. I have spent hours, making several key frames, to simply position and scale in sync. It wasn't until the last after effects session that we got taught about parenting. This saved me so much time, frustration and effort.  It was possibly one of the biggest things I overcame, although very simple!

The Below video just one example of this, notice the sign in the right hand side not fully coming into shot.

Organisation of files

I've come to realise the importance of organising your files, the hard way. I failed at labelled any of my layers, files etc. So when it came to making the title sequence using a collation of my idents I found it really, really difficult. It has possibly took me twice as long to structure my title sequence. Although its taken me until finishing my animations to realise this, I'm pretty sure I'll be using it again soon at some point, and the first thing I intend on doing, is naming them accordingly. Not only within After Effects, but everything I do, of any level of complexity, will need labelling and naming appropriately.

Working with audio

I found choosing appropriate audio really quite difficult. A lot of the music I felt would work, simply didn't, whether it be the beat, words, or not communicating my top ten appropriately. It took me until the final crit, to gain some really good feedback and suggestions regarding audio.

Working with audio felt simple enough, but when editing it, things became that bit more complex. I found it difficult making it fit my moving image, I regret not starting with music in the first place, it would have given my design more direction. Again, something else I will do first in further projects.

Top ten things - Time keeping

Over the course of this module, I've had countless to do lists, action plans a gone through a serious amount of sticky notes. Its definitely help keep my head together, and made me realise what needs doing and when to be sure to meet the deadline.

Top ten things - Title sequence - Adaptions to transitions

After looking at my title sequence, I realised how awful some of my transitions were, so I decided to work on them as best as I could.

Below: I've sped up the speed of the scaling and positioning from moving from the table to the window. Before I'd made this change, it took far too long to fade and move, thus, didn't flow.

Transition between 3rd and 4th ident below:
Previously the transition had been very 'sketchy' and seem to shake into position. I've altered this to be as smooth as I can, also not as smooth as I would like it, I feel its the best I can do.

Title sequence with altered transitions so far:

Transition between ident 1 and 2:
I have sped up the time it takes for the fading in and out of the scenery. Previously it was possibly four times as long; it wasn't smooth between frames.

I had to be quite creative in making this transition work, I could think of a way to do it. SO it was suggest by a peer I used the image of the bar, within the window, to zoom into. It took a while to achieve, due to not labelling or saving my composition correctly, but I got there in the end. Quite proud of it, I must say, how ever simple it looks.

Full title sequence, all alterations made, finalised with an ending. I have yet to play around with the audio as its not quite right yet.

Changes to music:
I've managed to fade the audio pieces softer within this piece, as previously its was very misjointed. I've also changed the audio choice within this piece, deleting some and extending others, feeling it more appropriate to my title sequence.

Top ten things - Title sequence - Finale

Storyboard

I thought the ending would be best to focus on the channel, date and time. So I decided on a very simple animation, one relating closely to BBC one idents; There are several which take a circular form in the direction of design.

Art work used:

Piece on its own:

I'm really pleased with this design, its simple, effective, and highlights the details needed to be known by viewers.

Top ten things - Title sequence so far

Since my last post, I've added my last few idents to the sequence, altered a few transitions and began designing the last few seconds. I'm having trouble with transitions, some flow others don't. I'm beginning to get frustrated with it, so will see Lorraine at some point to see if she can point me in the right direction.

I've also forgotten to add the music half way through the title sequence, so that will need doing!

Top ten things - Ident 4 - Improvement

Top ten things - Ident 4 design

I decided on a beach bar setting, due to the connotations it has, they are renowned for selling cocktails and mocktails alike, So found it a perfect scene to draw and render up. I tried to choose an appropriate audio for the 'holiday theme' which is also connotated by a beach bar.

The art work designed for the ident:

This ident design is going to be used for the title sequence; I haven't added the title, date, time or channel.

The finished piece. I'm very happy with the ident, i've managed to follow my storyboard precisely. I had a few timing issues and possibly have a few alterations to still make. I'm happy with the colour palette, I have tried to make colours as realistic to the objects and scenery used as possible, to make it believable and understandable to a user.

I've added audio here, choosing a karaoke version of 'la bamba' feeling it fits the 'holiday theme' I've gone for. I chose to work with the karaoke version, as told to us previously, singing within audio is hard to work with and edit. Its a typical holiday song you hear, and is popular and known to my directed target audience.

Top ten things - Alterations to title sequence

I wasn't 100% happy with the transitions between sequences, so I made a few alterations to make them smoother. I also changed the timing of certain area's quickening some. I have yet to produce the remaining 25 seconds.

Top ten things - Title sequence so far

The Video so far, using my planned transitions.

Looking at transitions:

As I'm combining my idents, I needed to end each short, to cut out the dates, times and title and instead create a transition between each. I knew this was going to be difficult as each is every different from the next. I have had to use very simple facings and transition edits to make them smooth and believable. I have yet to replace the missing music in the 2nd ident.

(Right)

Top ten things - Ident 3 - Suitable for title sequence use

Here I have adapted the video length and content to be suitable to transition into the title sequence.

Top ten things - Final ident 3 - 'Pineapple twist'

As I'm creating idents which are set in a setting which mocktails would be created, I wanted to start focussing on the more popular establishments which do this; a bar. I want to create a sophisticated bar scene, which shows the making of a mocktail. I picked on of my easier 'top ten mocktail' recipes, which had just a few ingredient I would need to animate.

First initial Storyboard for 3rd ident (left).

Finalised storyboard (left)

Visuals to be animated:

Finalised video:

I was really pleased with the outcome of this video. It just goes to show that storyboards really do help. This was created rather quickly and efficiently because I had reference and a guide.

Top ten things - Finished 2nd ident - 'Crazy cow'

I have finally finished my second ident visually, but have sound to add yet, It will be very similiar to my first due to the nature of the environment its set in.

I have added the date, time and channel within this ident to finalise.

With audio:

Top ten things - Title sequence so far

Just getting a start on making the title sequence. I intend on using my idents to make the bulk of it, as it saves me time, and will look effective, relevant and consistent. The transition between the two visually works, but I need to edit the timing, its that bit too slow.

I have found file organisation a real issue, to the extent my computer crashes due to the amount of 'stuff' I have going on when opening my files. I'm slowly trying to get my head around it, but am finding it very difficult.

Top ten things - Ident 2 - Improvement

I have finally added words into the equation. Theres still a few issues I need to deal with, like timing; the words need to have more on screen time. I also need to think about how this with be transitioned into the next scene.

Within making this I had some real issues with scaling and positioning in sync, but I soon got a better understanding of 'parenting' objects, thus overcoming this issue.

I need to start thinking about audio too, it was suggested in the last crit that I used similar sounds to that within my first ident, but to possibly heighten the volume.
