What is design for print - Design production - Research
The information i'd like to / could include
- Choose substrate appropriate for print type
- Work with CMYK when dealing with screen to print
- Work to the size of the print out
- Use finishes to add to a product
- Spell check before printing
- Always do a pre-flight check
- Produce mock ups before printing final pieces
- Get several printing quotes, early on.
- Learn roughly what things cost (unit cost) the more the cheaper
- Be aware the stock will effect the vibrancy of the print out, if uncoated it will be less saturated than that on gloss.
- Always work with 300dpi - High resolution for print out
- Composition - slug, bleed, columns, layout of book (imposition)

Paper types
Newsprint: Short life span, cheap, used in newspapers and comics
Antique: roughest finish offered on offset paper, used to add texture to publications such as annual reports.
Uncoated woodfree: Largest printing and writing paper category - e.g office paper and photocopy paper
Mechanical: Produced using wood pulp, for short term use, eg newspaper
Art board: Uncoated board, cover stock.
Art: High quality paper, good printing surface, especially for half tones and where detail is important. Colour printing, magazines.
Cast coated: High - gloss finish
Chromo: Waterproof coating on one side, good for embossing. Used for labels, wrappings and covers.
Cartridge: Thick white paper used for pencil and ink drawings.
Grey board: Lined or unlined board made from waste paper. Packaging material.

Print methods:
-Lithographic
- Gravure
- Screen print
- Flexography
- Pad - printing
- Six colour
Lithography:
Uses metal plate to transfer a design via a rubber blanket to the stock. Typically four colour (CMYK)
Wash print:
Allows most delicate of colours to be applyed to a substrate. Uses highly diluted ink to produce a flat colour which is subtle.
Silk screen:
Imposes an image onto a substrate by forcing ink through a screen has has a design. Slow process, high quality.
Letterpress:
Relief printing in which an inked raised surface is forced against a substrate. First form of commercial printing. Unique in its slight indentations through varying prints.
Hot metal printing:
The process of casting type in lines of molten metal.
Thermography:
Used to produce raised letters on substrates. Powder dispensed onto sheet of printed paper, the powder sticks, when pushed through an oven fuses with substrate and leaves a raised surface.

Preparing artwork correctly for print is the sign of a proffesional. It will save you and the printer a lot of grief when done correctly. Always get the client to sign off the proof, it offers some insurance if things go wrong.

What is design or print - Finishing - Experimenting with Embossing
A while ago now, I used to attend craft classes in which the establishment provided equipment, I remembered I used something called heat embossing which involved using a special pen / glue, powder and heat gun. The pen drawn onto any material, the glue from the pen being clear, the powder is then poured over it, excess poured off, and the heat gun blown over it. Eventually the metallic powder heats up and bonds with the material. Its a really nice effect, and is very flexible considering any shape can be drawn. Although, small, intricate detail is hard to achieve.

Print workshop - Identifying print methods
We were asked to bring in several examples of prints with us to the session. We each got into a small group , and with a view finder, to examine each of the print pieces to try and understand the processes they under went, and how correctly grammatically define a piece of work.

I feel I'm really gaining some understanding of print throughout these workshops, I suddenly want to try out a lot more new and interesting print methods within my own work. By doing so I'll be able to understand the grammatical terms better as I'll have personal experience with doing them, and my work outcomes will be of a professional standard.

Some print examples
Kinds: Rotary, digital, screen, and pad.
Rotary:
Plates are wrapped around a cylinder, an automates process and the material to be printed can be sheet fed or on a roll.
Plate > Blanket cylinder > Impression Cylinder
3 Main types:
- Lithography
- Rotogravure
- Flexography
Offset Lithography - Onto a rubber roller
Etched aluminium plates wrapped around a cylinder transfer ink to an 'offset' ribber blanket roller and then to a print surface. Sheet or web fed.
WEDNESDAY 19TH - PRINTERS VISIT (Keep date free)
Rotogravure / photogravure
Copper plates (etches deeper, plates last longer) transfer ink directly to print surface, usually rolls.
Plates are more durable and so are good for long print runs
Typical gravure job - Lino flooring, newspaper if a long run
Flexography
Rubber plate, relief printing, silicon surface e.g Crisp packet
A positive mirror image rubber polymer plate, on a cylinder, transfers 'sticky' ink directly to print surface. Usually roll fed.
E.g Chocolate foiled wrappers, bottle labels
Litho - planographic (Flat)
Rotogravure - Intaglio (Etched)
Flexography - Relief (Raised surface)
Digital printing
Repproduction of images by translating digital code direct from a computer to a material without an intermediate physical process.
'Rip' - Transfers from computer to printer (software processes it)
Digital printing for mock ups, to check stock and layout
Screen print
A printmaking technique that uses a woven mesh template.
PAD printing
A process that transfers 2d image to a 3d object
e.g - Pens, flasks, gold balls etc
Colours:
Grayscale : Black and white continuous tone
Duo tone: Continuous tone image is printed in 2 or more spot colours
Spot colour: One or more specially mixed RGB colours
Mono - One colour
C, U , M, coated, uncoated, matte
dots = accurately reproduced in CMYK
Process guide - CMYK - first page shown in solids and tints. DE: Europe
Colour bridge - 1089 colours, shows closest CYMK next to each of the solid RGB colours.
Pantone books provide colours for screen too, for web design.
The guide really showed me how to use pantone swatches, Unfortunately I missed the colour theory session in my first year in which class mates were shown how to use them, I felt like i'd missed out. This tutorial has given me a clearer understanding.
An intro into colour theory
Monochromatic - Adding light and dark to create a tone of a colour
Analogues - Colours next to each other on the colour wheel
Complementary - Colours directly opposite each other on the colour wheel
Compliments: Colours of the same value but are opposite hues, when desaturated, they are the same shade of grey. Not comfortable to look at, line between two seems to wobble. Not brilliant colours to work with.
If using bright colours and need a highlight or shadow, stick to using white or black.
