VISUAL LANGUAGE - GRIDS, TYPE N' STUFF

x-height = height of lower case 'x'
acender = above lower case x
Decender = Below "    "
Baseline = the line in which lower case e.g: aco lye on

The range of different fonts:

  • Roman
  • Italic
  • Thin
  • Light
  • Regular
  • Semi-bold
  • Bold
  • Extra bold
  • Condensed
  • Extended
  • Light condensed
10pt lettering (font size)
4pt Leading (space between next line of font)
= 14pt Line feed OR 14pt baseline to baseline

PICA  1 PICTAM = 12PT
Width of a paragraph called a 'measure', measure a 'measure' in pica's.
Ident by an 'm', by the width of the pt of font used.

PICA = APPROX 0.35MM

LIGATURES - The way difficult letter are joined.

Kerning - The space between any pair of letters.
Tracking - space between all letters.
Reverse cut - Letter reversed out of back colour - e.g white on black

TASK
Find a magazine page layout. 
Draw your own grid (using 8 columns minimum) - small scale double credit card size
Produce several new layouts using same content as article found - changing composition, scale etc
By detailed when drawing up idea's - thumbnails
2 x A3 paper



2nd Lesson - Create your own, new, deatiled layout for an already existing article. Choose font, kerning, font size, use your own grid etc...



I've used sample pieces of type, size and colour which I feel would be appropriate for this article.
