OUGD301 - Progress Crit

So after the progress crit was cancelled we decided to get together upstairs anyway and spent a few hours doing our own. I didn't really have many questions as most of my briefs are finished, so I gave some advice to those needing them. I did have concerns however about my competition brief, it wasn't really getting anywhere and i needed some inspiration.

it was suggested that I try and merge the accent to create a visual, and once I had content I could push it across a range. It was suggested trying it on stationary, for instance.

So the crit helped a little, managed to get me inspired to get on. It was nice that as a group, we are not entirely directed by the course structure, that we can direct our own learning, feedback and progress crits.

Accessorize - Packaging Mock up

Using the screen prints, I mocked up some of the initial packaging. The colours aren't what I intend on working with, but I wanted to see if the actual nets I had created worked. I'm happy with the result and intend on printing the final nets soon.

Competition Brief - More thoughts

So I've decided I want to make Advertisement and promotional material for my existing publications through typographic posters relating to onomatopoeia, but one thing which was suggested to me was to produce a range for each location, but only to place specific posters in specific locations - relating to the locations of my publications.

Another thought was to incorporate sound waves, to make it clearer as to how to pronounce the phrases and words correctly. It will also give a visual element which I can incorporate across a range of products.

I'm going to listen to the BBC accents recordings and make note of letters and words and the pitch change between each, hopefully applying these to my chosen phrases:

Birmingham - Our Wench
Liverpool - Thats when jesus christ was playing full back
Newcastle - Ye knaa what ah mean leik
Yorkshire - Take the rod out of your arse
Ireland - Do you think i came up the lagan in a bubble

The way in which they're spoken:

Birmingham - arr wenj
Liverpool - thts wen jezuz cryst woz playing full back
Newcastle - Yee naa wha ameen layk
Yorkshire - tek rod owt yur arz
Ireland - Do yoo think ay caym up thu lagan in a bubul

Competition Brief - Visual Onomatopoeia

So I want to focus my designs on Onomatopoeia, the idea of words looking how they sound, and trying to achieve this through typography design of chosen individual letterforms and words. I found an image which explains clearer:

Firstly I need to pick the phrases I intend on designing for poster format.

Accessorize - Screenprinting

So, I screen printed today. I tried to get as close to the colour palette as I could, but it proved difficult. So I've decided with the prints to create packaging mock ups, and potentially some Christmas cards, and wrap for the store.

The range of stock I printed onto.

Competition Brief - Starting

So I needed to look back at the competition brief and really make a start on what i was going to decided to do for it. So the brief:

Brief:

You are required to design a range of advertisement, promotional and product material which will be driven by your 'Doing my nut in' outcome. The products designed will need to investigate sound recordings from the British Library Sounds collection, focusing on accents and dialects. Design material will need to have a typographic and language focus.

Considerations:

Consider the way that different accents may suggest particular fonts – some bolder, some softer, sharp, distressed, condensed, thin, fat, serif/sans serif etc. You decide – the possibilities are endless.

Background:

Use whatever methods and media you consider appropriate to convey your solution effectively – as long as you express a solid idea, inform us and show us your typographic skills. Make sure that you incorporate typographically detailed text matter that expresses an information hierarchy. Remember that words and language are our collateral and that your submission should be essentially typographic.

Mandatory Requirements:

Broad range of research
The products designed need to be typographically led
A range of appropriate advertisement, promotional material and retail graphics

I have decided:

For this brief I intend on creating a range of poster designs, for promotional and advertisement purpose of my 'Doing my nut in' publications. These will explore the relation between spoken and written language. My content will be a phrase taken from a sound recording found on the british library recordings - Accent and Dialect, and constructed in a way to make the words look how they are said. I will be exploring line weight, shape, and height of letterforms to create a visual sound. I also intent on exploring soundwaves and how these can influence my design decisions.

Accessorize - In store mock up

So I wanted to know how my designs would look across a store format and how they would be applied. I tried to mock up the store, (not very well) to show how my designs would be applied.

Typosgraphe - Screenprinting

So me and Sarah went down to screen printing to print content for the exhibition itself, thsi included the A1 two colours type timeline poster (which took two os us the pull the squeegee!), A5 two colours leaflets and A3 two colour Posters. Although it took a long time, we managed to print a ton of leaflets out which will hopefully make more people aware of the event, several posters to put around the events, and the posters which will be placed in college and the White Cloth Gallery to again, make people aware of the event.

OUGD302 - Managing my time

So todays been rather stressful! Got told past competition briefs didn't count at the mandatory competition brief, that it had to be one from this year. So within the next week I really need to look at some, start researching and creating. I'm going to try and put aside 2 / 3 days to do this.

My diary really has had an important part in keeping me up to date with everything! I've followed it so far, got into habit of planning my entire week on a sunday evening ready for the week ahead so I'm never stopping wondering what there is to do.

So Wednesday:

Accessorize - Posters

I started the poster designs, trying to be similiar to there original poster designs but felt this then stood away from my colour palette and didnt look like my designs. So I started looking at my original concept of linking retail graphics to the products being sold. So I did a montage of my illustrations, with a few replaced with the products Accessorize sell.

Posters applied to shop displays

Typosgraphe - Updated website

I decided to speak to Sarah after completing the website design. I'd realised I'd missed out a few things, she pointed out the need to vote for type foundries too, along with how to potentially lay it out. So with this in mind i've added a new navigation bar and mocked up Type Foundry submissions. Also, the event page, I needed to mock up some kind of gallery system to show photographs taken from the event.

Accessorize - Store Front Design

I decided the best way to communicate how my illustrations and graphics worked with the store was to create a vector of a store front and mock up the designs. I create a default, of which I could then apply my four designs to.

Type Factory - Website

So after me and Sarah met up we decided to swop roles, which involved me creating the website. I've designed it to be consistant with our other event promotional material using the same typefaces, colour palette and format.

When we first started thinking about the exhibition, we decided we wanted a publication which involved showcasing everyones work, using icons which represented each submission, the icon would relate to a shape within the work. I have used this idea within the website too, so the publication and website link closely together. The idea for the website was so people would be able to vote for their favourite submission of which the top ten would be announced at the event and be invited to speak about their work.

The website has been designed to be easy to use and navigate through. To see the submissions, you go onto the 'Submissions' tab page, hover over an icon to see a preview of the work and name of the artist. To seen / read more information about the submission, you click an icon and a pop up window will come up giving you a full colour image and bio.

To vote for your favourite submission you go onto the 'voting' tab page, hover the icon to see a preview of the work and artist name, click the icon in which a pop up window will come up to confirm you want to vote for this artist with a 'submit' button. Once this is clicked another box opens to show confirmation of your vote.

The about page gives the same description of the event which is found in the poster and leaflet. This is the same within the contact page and exhibition page. Giving contact details for the white cloth gallery, and its location, along with mine and Sarahs contact details.

Type Factory - Timeline poster

Originally I was going to try and do the timeline poster but I was finding it really difficult considering it was very type and layout, I had collected all the information and images to use within it but when it came to laying it out, I couldn't do it. So me and Sarah had a chat and decided to swap roles, she was to do the poster, and I was to do the website instead.

My original awful timeline with the information I had collected:

Sarah doing her thing and making it looking amazing:

We decided with the leaflet and poster designs we were going to use a Cyan spot colour, after speaking to Sarah we thought it would be great to make all the images duotone with the Cyan colour. I'm really happy with the outcome Sarah produced, I felt I've learnt a lot from her in regard to layout, InDesign, and down to using a baseline too.
