DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING - Some idea's

Initial idea

Thinking on the basis of the word 'Empty'

With the phrase, empty the box?

Contradiction - the boxes are obviously empty

Some other idea's - Using a pint glass

Some experiments with cut out font

Here I was thinking along contradictions, using objects to reveal this, using alongside my hand rendered type and images. I do feel this could limit me, as empty and full are very easy and simple to come up with objects to reveal a contradiction - literally anything which can have something in it. It would mean designs would be repeated and pointless.

DESIGN IS ABOUT DOING - My intentions

My Opposites:  EMPTY - FULL

Handcrafted objects, to be photographed. Creating 3d objects from card and paper with drawn drawn type contradicting subject matter.

Here the opposites were Midday - Midnight

Some drawings and idea's in relation to empty and full

DESIGN IN ABOUT DOING - The brief

Things to think about:

  • People need to see your work
  • Look at the website
  • Visual Investigation to opposite
  • Define 'Opposite'
  • What do i want to focus on?
  • Medium?
  • What exactly i want to do?
  • Research.

Some important things to consider with the new module

"Document, record, reflect, evaluate"

In collaborations remember to design for the 'real world', although it's actually 'out there'

Start defining what my area's of interests are, reflect on it, and how i respond to problems - design context, what inspires me and why.

VISUAL LANGUAGE - BOOK WORKS - Further development

Using information found about each of the species of birds, I decided to insert this information beside each of the windows, forcing a reader, to read about the bird before viewing it.
Another change I have made is the red lines I had used previously, they didn't really work in filling up the negative space, instead the writing, I feel does the trick.

One possibility was to reveal the information with the birds behind the window, but I found there wasn't enough space to do so, and I didn't want to make the image smaller to accommodate the writing as fine detail couldn't be seen.

VISUAL LANGUAGE - BOOK WORKS - STOCK

Looking at a range of stock, trying to test out which was best to print onto, fold, cut etc. I found the easiest to work with was very thin, brown parcel paper, but when attempting to cut out the windows, it made it too delicate, and needed to have something backed behind it. The grey seemed to dull and washed out, and was too dark to be able to see the intricate designs. I also realised after printing, that I had made an error with the front page, I'd enlarged the image, not realising it had gone onto both front and back page.

I decided to print the birds onto tracing paper, as when the window frame opened, it was clear enough to resemble being outside, but opaque enough that other designs in other pages, when layered behind, weren't too visible.

Experimenting whether to cut out the windows, or to leave them be...

Window panes not too aesthetically pretty, needs some work done

VISUAL LANGUAGE - BOOK WORKS - FURTHER ILLUSTRATIVE DESIGN

Some characterised birds to use within pages

A decorative border to fill in negative space (issue raised in crit)

A better, more detailed front cover design, along with type.

Hand drawn bird names in scrolls, again filling negative space

MERCHANDISE IDEA'S

A little further development I felt was needed to make my product the 'starter pack' it needs to be. So I thought about creating some extra little things, like stickers, coupons etc. I needed to think of some issues food intolerant people had.

From personal experience, informing the chef at a restaurant of your food intolerance's was difficult, and would usually result in them forgetting or not being told. Ideally it needed to be in writing and handed to him. So I came up with the idea of having a specialised note pad to write on and have given to the chef personally. It would hold info like your table number and the food you were intolerant too. Along with a nice personal message (builds a good relationship).
Here's my design for that...

Another idea was coupons for food products recommended within my starter pack as a way of 'trying it yourself'. Here's the designs for that..
