Net idea.

This is just a quick template design I produced, with the thought of, in each of the squares, I will print onto acetate, the sequence of my declining crosses, and as it opens, the sequence would be revealed. I'm not quite there with colour yet!

In reference to the black, green and white final designs :

After the crit, I found there was a few adjustments I could make to make the fact within my designs speak for itself. One problem, I personally identified was the designs were all too similiar, another adjustment needed, after the crit was colour choice. Some people stated that the colours were in no relation to Christianity, also I had used more than the required number of colours; there were two different greens used, unknown to my eye but were apparent within the final printed pieces. So with all of this in mind, I re-designed each final piece.

This is a completely new design as my previous ones were too similar. I've used the symbol of the 'i' to show a decline in the religion, this with the use of a timeline, in context makes sense. I've used bible like colours; sepia tones. I've created continuity by using a white border box which is used within each of my designs. I've also used the same type, but resized it so it isn't the focal point of the design.

With this designs I have tried to make the 'i' a symbol, which is then seen throughout images used in other designs.

I've used the symbol 'i' to create a dissapearing cross; a symbol of christianity, which is meant to re-create brick work - Churches are renowned to be made from it. Throughout all of my designs I have used symbols which reference the religion, in relation to the place of worship.

I'm not too sure if I like my final designs or not! Well, there's always going to be room for improvement but I guess once I have my crit, and gain some opinions and see what I think! I really liked this project, it was in no way restricted to what you could do! I must admit, I found finding time to do this project very difficult considering I had so much else going on at university, so it was a challenge.

Image Only: I'm glad the posters have to work as a series otherwise this poster wouldn't work on it's own! I like it, but feel it needs to be clearer what it's insinuating (A cross in relation to christianity), perhaps straightening the arms of the tree would make it look more cross like, and possibly, as part of the sequence, i could have more leaves falling from it, and eventually browning.

Combination of image and type: Not too sure about this one, I feel the image needs to be a lot more simplistic for it to work with the text, or it needs to be smaller, using a smaller space than the letters, it just makes the design too complicated.

Text only: I really like this. The simplicity does it i think. It's a pretty clear message. Improvements which could be made is regarding colour pallette I think, or maybe using some lovely decorative bible like corners and borders, or maybe even the text, but thats a whole different kettle of fish.

I really like the illustration here and wish i'd put it to better use. I may think about using it in a final design or something, we shall see...

Just a few quick initial designs!

Initially I really like this concept, but when I realised I had to include the entire headline, I felt it took the simplistic affect needed. I wanted to just use the word decline, but this, in no context wasn't understandable. But I wanted to stick to the font chosen within the centre. The colour palette was a VERY bad choice, black and red isn't something you link with religion and could give the wrong impression, so I decided it was best to stay well away from these two colours together!

This I do like, its colour palette relates to the church, and a hint of biblical serif font has been used. The overall idea was for the font to create a cross, which this design has achieved. I think if I edit this image some more and played around a bit, it could work really well.

This was a very quick mock up. Attempted to create cross with type, but overall don't feel this pieces connotes the idea of christianity declining.

This was an improvement from an above design, but change to colour palette is a need.

Visual Thinking - Think channel 4 adverts!

Today we got given the task of picking a letterform to create a sequence with, but their was a twist. Like the channel 4 adverts, a part of the letterform should be divided up between planes. My group decided to pick the letterform 'O', which became quite a difficult one to pick. We then had to make a viewfinder.

We began with simply dividing the letter into sections, using the view finder, to place the pieces of letter across a spread of the room. This became extremely difficult as the further away a letterform was, the smaller it became, finding the right size became a serious issue.

So I thought of an idea, to create a sequence, in which to look at, you would have to view from below. Within the classroom their was many metal lighting strips in which i suggested we could hand parts of the letters at different points. We tried this, but found it difficult as string wasn't sturdy enough, card got in the way of viewing. 

As we had spent so much time faffing around with idea's which were just too complex, we decided to make it easy for ourselves. I suggested we simply stuck sections of the letter on a table, at a 90 degree upright angle. This causes another sizing issue. So using a protractor, I was able to allow distance change, in which from a certain distance each letter 'o' would look the same size. So after calculating sizings, distance and what not, we were able to create a lovely, simple sequence. Finally!

Visual thinking - Sequence

We were set out into group, in which each group were given a word. We had to produce a sequence reflecting this word, using a sheet given to us, with the repeated letter 'A' in a range of fonts. We were to cut up, stick down and arrange these sequences onto squares in which we were asked to cut out.

My first word was expand, probably not the best approach, very fiddly, but represented the word I think.

My second word was skip. A simplistic approach, this word was guessed correctly when asked by another person.

After all that research, we finally got the brief for it. Before we got this, we had to do an exercise in which we had to write a fact and an opinion in relation to our chosen article. The fact would then be the basis for the brief. Mine was: Christianity in decline according to polls.

For this brief we have to create 3 posters, one containing just image, another just type, and another the combination of the two using a limited 3 colours including stock. In which they must be visually consistant, be simple and to keep it to the point. Only got a week to do it, so better get to!
